Gungahlin Jets Juniors President James “Jimmy” Risbey is making a big impact off the scoreboard, creating a safe and welcoming space for neurodivergent children to enjoy Australian Football.
In 2025, Jimmy worked with the AFL Disability Inclusion Lead NSW/ACT to launch the Gungahlin Jets Kickability Centre – a four-week program for children aged 9 to 13. The program gives participants the chance to learn AFL skills, play mini-matches in a low-pressure setting, or simply join in group activities.
With guidance from the League, Jimmy tailored sessions to the children’s needs – using storyboards to explain drills, reducing sensory triggers, and even offering tackle bags as “time out” tools. His flexible, thoughtful approach has helped children feel comfortable, included, and confident.
The first program was so successful that a second Kickability series ran in July 2025. Jimmy is driving participation through social media and the Gungahlin Jets community, while also coaching neurodivergent children in Auskick and Under 9s.
Renowned for his patience and encouragement, Jimmy adapts his coaching to each child’s learning style, providing extra support where needed. His work is proving that with the right approach, AFL can truly be a game for everyone.
