2017 Best and Fairest winner, Players Player, co-vice captain and 2017 AFL Canberra First Grade Men’s Team of the Year, Will Hambleton, commits to the Gungahlin Jets for 2019.
The 20-year-old has played a significant role in leading a young group through the Jets AFL Canberra-Division 1 journey. Will has played Division 1 since 2015, the first year the Jets were elevated to the competition. He along with a number of other young juniors were provided the opportunity to extend themselves early in their careers and their development is paying off. Will is proof that the Jets pathways opportunity is a success that inspires our younger players to remain loyal to the Club.
Will has had an interrupted year this year, spending five weeks overseas. Since he has returned he has turned into a utility for the Jets and has shown his ability to play both forward and back. His consistent footy late in the year has been an important contributor to the Jets improving performances.
The Jets are excited to have Will, a local junior, committed to the club and further establish a culture that drives improvement on the field. He has seen the fruits of some of his own work off and on the field.
Will said, “The general look and feel of the team has had a massive improvement this year. We’ve brought in some quality players who have brought a professional feel both on and off the field. The culture of the club has really started to come along and with that, we’ve seen huge improvements from our squad.”
The thought of improving even further in 2019 was an important factor influencing Will’s decision to commit to the Jets.
“I think 2019 will be a massive year for us. I think we are finally starting to click both on and off the field and with the youth in our squad and the quality of our Rising Stars, I only see us improving on the foundation work from 2018 … hopefully taking the four points from one of the top four clubs next season”
