Silky midfielder, Luke ‘Marto’ Martin, commits to the Gungahlin Jets for 2019.
The 26-year-old returned this year to football after spending almost three years out of the game. Luke has spent most of his football playing in Victoria in the Northern Football League. Luckily, for the Jets, Luke move to Canberra for work and has continued a career with the AFL.
Luke has shown a huge improvement in 2018, and the club is excited to see where his football can grow in the coming years at the Jets. In recent weeks he has established himself as a high possession winger and he has been instrumental in making the Jets more competitive in 2018.
Luke has accepted the challenge of returning to a high standard of football and has enjoyed helping the group grow and improve.
“Being out of footy for 3 years, preseason was fairly challenging. Playing with the boys has been great and you can see the improvement at each training session. We are improving different facets of our game and it’s starting to show on game day. Obviously, it was great to get a few wins on the board and run a few teams closer than we have before. The feeling amongst the boys is great, we want to be winning more in the future.“
Luke’s looking forward to helping shape Jets footy in 2019 and has high hopes for a developing young group.
“2019 should be an exciting year for the Jets. We have a lot of young players coming through and the club is building a stable list. For myself I’m looking to build my fitness base and take on more of a leadership role around the club and help some of the Rising Star boys migrate into Senior Football. Hopefully we can bring in a few recruits, with have a solid pre season and push for finals”
